EV Charging Station Installation

Huntington Beach Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

EV Car charging station has become a very popular demand for both residential and commercial properties. With this rise in popularity of electric cars, it’s important that your business is able to accommodate many types of cars with high quality charging stations.

Choosing the right EV Charger

  • TYPE OF PLUG Except for Teslas, EVs use an SAE-standard J1772 to plug into the charging stations. Teslas require a slightly different connection, which we also can install.
  • CHARGER LEVEL Level 1 chargers are lower voltage, really only efficient for electric golf carts. We’re likely to recommend you go with a Level 2 charger, to help cut down charging time and deliver the best voltage to your vehicle.
  • AMPERAGE The higher the amps, the faster and more efficiently your car will charge.

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 charging, or “overnight charging,” connects to a normal 120 volt outlet. Level 1 charging stations are the least expensive and easiest to install, but some “electric cars” need up to 20 hours on a Level 1 charger to completely charge batteries. Overnight chargers are best for light vehicle use. If you commute a long distance to work in your electric car, or if you combine daytime commuting with evening errands or driving for pleasure, you may find a level 1 charger too slow for your schedule and activities.

  • Home charging
  • Suitable for all-electric battery electric vehicle drivers with low daily driving usage
  • Requires a grounded (three-prong) standard residential 120V outlet
  • Suitable for low- and medium-range plug-in hybrids

Level 2 Charging

Level 2 chargers can charge your electric vehicle’s battery in as little 3 hours (charging times vary according to the make of your EV). Some Southern California cities offer rebates for these fast charging stations, so while they’re more expensive than level 1 chargers in the short run, in the long term, level 2 chargers are the best choice for most EV car owners, especially when they factor in rebates and the convenience of much faster charging times.

By law, level 2 chargers must be installed by an experienced, licensed electrician, because improper installation can result in a fire hazard or electric shock danger. In Southern California, no one has has more experience and a better track record of level 2 charger installation than Trout Electric.

  • Home and public charging
  • Typically requires a charging unit on a 240V outlet, like one used to power an electric clothes dryer
  • May require a service upgrade by a certified electrician
  • Public Level 2 chargers have a standard EV connection plug that fits all current vehicles, except for Teslas, which require an adapter
  • Adds 20-60 miles per hour, depending on amps

Level 3 Charging

Level 3 chargers are the fastest chargers available, and can charge an electric car in 30 minutes to an hour. These charging stations are not intended for home use, and are only installed in commercial or industrial settings. You may find level 3 chargers in municipal parking lots, government facilities, or outside business parks.

  • Fastest charge currently available
  • Commercial use
  • Adds 60-100 miles per 20 minutes, depending on amps
  • Charging at a DCFC station is only effective if your battery state-of-charge (SOC) is below 80 percent. After that point, charging will slow down significantly

Why You need a professional Electrician for your installation

Let it Glow provides you the exact load calculation and highest option available without going over your business’s amperage limit. Going over that limit may cause power outages or unnecessary repairs, so our Southern California EV installation specialists will make sure your charger provides the appropriate amperage. Additionally, electric vehicle charging ports depend on safely wired outlets. This electricity supplies a dangerous amount of energy, so don’t try to install it yourself! We protect both you and your vehicle by making sure your new charging station is wired safely and to code.
